Chapter 1 - Book Bold Words Flashcards
Systems Biology
an approach that attempts to model the dynamic behavior of a whole biological system based on a study of the interaction among the systems parts.
Allows a prediction of what happens when a change occurs in one part of the system.
genome
the entire “library” of genetic instructions that an organism inherits.
genomics
studying whole sets of genes of a species as well as comparing genomes between species instead of looking at one specific gene at a time.
Bioinformatics
the use of computational tools to store, organize, and analyze the huge volume of data that results from high-throughput methods.
Negative Feedback
accumulation of an end product of a process slows the process down.
Positive Feedback
a product stimulates an enzyme in the reaction sequence increasing the rate of production of the product.
Clotting of blood.
Natural Selection
Charles Darwin.
the natural environment “selects” for the propagation of certain traits among naturally occurring variant traits in the population.
Best traits for an environment win and become more abundant.
Science
a way of knowing.
An approach to understanding the natural world.
Inquiry
a search for information and explanation often focusing on specific questions.
