Chapter 1 - Biological Aggression Flashcards
What’s the limbic system?
An area of the brain involved in emotion
What’s the amygdala?
A brain structure that’s thought to be involved in aggression
Name one study that links aggression and the amygdala?
In 1966 Charles Whitman killed 13 people. He left a note behind to doctors to examine his brain as he was convinced something was making him angry. He was found to have a brain tumour pushing against his amygdala
Problem with animal studies?
Human brains aren’t similar enough to compare
Evaluate link between biology and aggression?
Strengths:
Animal studies that involve the AM offer evidence as it’s linked
Study of Charles Whitman in 1966
Weaknesses:
Studying human brain difficult + risky
Animals and humans are different
Case studies are unreliable as it may be unique
What’s a hormone?
Chemical produced by the human body that sends signals to organs around the body via the bloodstream
What’s the role of testosterone?
Needed to make sperm develop male organs + features e.g deep voice
Evaluate role of testosterone on aggression?
Strengths:
Animals there’s a clear cause and effect
Humans show a relationship between the two
Weaknesses:
Not all humans with high T levels are aggressive
Animals are different to humans
