Chapter 1- Basic Anatomy and sounds of the human heart Flashcards
What is the membrane surrounding the heart ?
The pericardium
What is the region where the heart is located ?
The mediastinum
What is the glandular tissue positioned over the heart in the mediastinum ?
The thymus gland
Are the oesophagus and trachea also present in the mediastinum ?
Yes they are, deep in the mediastinum behind the heart
How are called the 2 superior chambers of the heart ?
The left atrium and the right atrium
What is the name of the wall between the 2 ventricles ?
The inter ventricular septum
What are the 3 blood vessels carrying deoxygenated blood in the right atrium ?
The superior vena cava
The inferior vena cava
The coronary sinus
What is the pulmonary tronc doing ?
The pulmonary tronc supplies the lungs with deoxygenated blood coming from the right ventricle
Are the pulmonary veins carrying oxygenated or deoxygenated blood back to the heart ?
The pulmonary veins are carrying oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium
What is the vessel linked to the left ventricle ?
The aorta carrying the blood from the left ventricle to the systemic circulation
Are the walls of the atria thiner than the walls of the ventricles ?
Yes
Is the wall of the left ventricle thicker than the wall of the right ventricle ?
Yes
Between which ribs is located the apex of the heart ?
The apex of the heart is located in the thoracic cavity between the 5 th and 6th left rib
Where can you best palpate or listen by auscultation the heart beat ?
At the apex of the heart, between the 5 th and 6 th left rib, at the point of maximum impulse.
Where is the mitral valve sound best heard ?
Over the apex of the heart in the 5 th intercostal space, in line with middle of the left clavicle.
