Convergence

Define masspersonal communication with examples
When a person uses a mass communication context for interpersonal communication OR when a person uses an interpersonal communication context for mass communication.
Example 1: making a public Facebook post (mass, because everyone can see it) for a Happy Birthday message to a friend (interpersonal, because you are referring to your one on one relationship).
Example 2: spam telephone calls. Your cellphone (interpersonal, because it’s your phone) is getting an automated message (mass, because it is used for a large group)
Describe the transition metaphor
Communication is a transmitter like radio and telephone because it has a source, transmittal, channel, and receiver.
Describe the interaction metaphor
Describes communication as a two way process of reciprocal action aka a back and forth. Takes the transmission metaphor and adds feedback (receivers response to the message) and fields of experience (the unique backgrounds of each communicator involved).
Describe the transaction metaphor
Acknowledges that people accomplish something in communication beyond just relaying messages back and forth. Our messages IMPACT those involved through content and relationship. Content is the surface level meaning (what is said) and relationship is how a message is said (politely, with attitude, sarcastically)
Describe the social construction metaphor
Stresses the ways communication shapes and creates the larger social realities in which we operate. This goes beyond sender/receiver and into the social world.
Define communication competence
The ability to communicate in a personally effective and socially appropriate manner.
Define ethics
A code of conduct based on respect for yourself, others, and your surroundings. Right vs wrong conduct.

Autonomy: individuals right to make choices and self determine
Responsibility: being accountable for the welfare of others and the consequences of ones actions
What are some examples of communication that violate ethical communication?
