What’s Science?
A process by which we try to understand how the natural world works
What’s scientific knowledge?
Is the inferences that are drawn from data or models
Is everything certain?
No, nothing is, only likelihood of degrees
What are the underlying assumptions?
- The world is real
- Humans can perceive and understarnd the real world
- Natural processes are sufficient to explain the natural world
- Nature operates the same everywhere, except where there’s contrary evidence
What’s the scientific method?
Problem/ question -> information -> hypothesis -> test hypothesis -> analyze data -> conclusions 1. not supported -> modify hypothesis -> communicate results 2. supported -> test hypothesis several more times -> communicate results
What’s geology?
The study of the Earth. Including structure, composition, the processes that act on it, and history
