Chapter 1 Flashcards
What are chemical changes?
Those that alter the composition (the chemical structure) of matter, during a chemical change; atoms rearrange, transforming the original substance into a different one
ie) iron rusting is a chemical change
What are physical properties?
Is one that a substance displays without changing its composition
What is a chemical property?
Is one that a substance displaying only by changing its composition via chemical change
What is chemistry?
The science that seeks to understand the properties and behaviour of matter by the studying the properties and behaviour of atoms and molecules
What is kinetic energy?
The energy associated with its motion
What is potential energy?
The energy associated with its position or composition
What is thermal energy?
The energy associated with the temperature of an object. (Actually a type of kinetic energy, because it arises from the motion of the individual atoms or molecules that make up an object
What is the law of the conservation of energy?
Energy is neither created nor destroyed, only transformed
What is the imperial system?
Used in the United States as a unit system
What is the metric system?
Used in most of the rest of the world as a unit system
What is the international system of units?
Which is a subsystem of the metric system
What is the metre(m)?
Is defined as the distance light travels through a vacuum in precisely 1/299792458s
What are SI base units?
Metre (m) length Kilogram (kg) mass Second (s) time Kelvin (K) temperature Mole (mol) amount of substance Ampere (A) electric current Candela (cd) luminous intensity
How do you convert Celsius to kelvin?
(T/K) = (Tc/C) + 273.15
What are physical changes?
Those that do not alter the chemical composition
ie) water boiling goes from liquid to gas
