Chapter 1, 2.1 Flashcards
Define biology
The study of life
List and describe the 8 properties of life
- Order- all living things are organized
- Response to stimuli- will react to a stimulus
- Reproduction
- Adaption- organisms can change to be able to fit into an environment
- Growth and development
- Regulation- automatically
- Homeostasis- maintain internal conditions constantly
- Process energy- obtain or make food and turn it into energy
Put these in correct order from least complex to most complex:
Ecosystem, organ system, organelle, molecule, atom, organism, biosphere, population, organ, cell, community, tissue
Atom, molecule, organelle, cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism, population, community, ecosystem, biosphere
What is a prokaryote?
Single cells organisms that lack organelles surrounded by a membrane and do not have nuclei surrounded by nuclear membrane.
What is a eukaryote?
Single celled organisms that do have membrane bound organelles
Define evolution
The process of gradual change during which new species arise from older species.
Describe the difference between a hypothesis, theory, and law
Hypothesis- testable educated guess
Theory- based on experimental results
Law- mathematical relationship that is consistently found to be true
List the step of the scientific method
- Observations
- Question
- Hypothesis
- Design experiment
- Collect and analyze data
- Conclusion
What are isotopes?
Different forms of the same element with the same amount of protons but different amount of neutrons
What is a chemical bond?
When elements donate or take an electron from another element to complete the outer shell
What is an ionic bond?
Bond between ions
What is a covalent bond?
When an electron is shared between two elements
What is a hydrogen bond
Bond by opposite charges attracting
