Chapter 1 (1.4) Flashcards
What types of visions are there?
-Stereoscopic vision
-Monocular vision
What are the difference between stereoscopic vision and monocular vision? (Number of eyes used)
Stereoscopic vision
-Both eyes at the front of the head
Monocular vision
-One eye on each side of the head
What are the difference between stereoscopic vision and monocular vision? (Angle of vision)
Stereoscopic vision
- A smaller field of vision
Monocular vision
-A wide field of vision
What are the difference between stereoscopic vision and monocular vision? (Type of vision)
Stereoscopic vision
-Three-dimensional
Monocular vision
-Able to see different object at the same time with no overlapping
What are the difference between stereoscopic vision and monocular vision? (Estimate position of object)
Stereoscopic vision
-Able to estimate distance of object accurately
Monocular vision
-Unable to estimate distance of object accurately
What are examples of animals with stereoscopic vision?
-Eagle
-Lion
-Cat
-Monkey
-Owl
What are examples of animals with monocular vision?
-Goat
-Rat
-Fish
-Chicken
-Rabbit
Parrot
What are the advantages of stereoscopic vision?
-Enable predators to determine the position of their prey
-Gives a better perception of size, depth and distance
What are the advantages of monocular vision?
Enable prey to detect predators from any angle
What is stereoscopic hearing?
Stereoscopic hearing is the hearing of sounds from the surroundings with two ears
What is the function of stereoscopic hearing?
Enable us to determine the direction of the sound accurately
How do we determine the direction of the sound accurately with stereoscopic hearing?
The ear nearer to the source of the sound receives a stronger stimulus. It also receive the sound earlier than the other ear.
Therefore, the impulses from this ear reaches the brain earlier than the impulse from the other ear.
The brain interprets these two different impulses. It is able to determine the direction of sound.
What is the advantage of animals having stereoscopic hearing?
Detect the presence of prey and predators more quickly
