What is anthropology?

They come from many different societies and cultures

What is biological Anthropology?
It is the systematic study of humans as biological organisms
What is archaeology?
It is the study of material remains (usually from the past) to describe and explain human behaviour.
What is linguistic anthropology?
It is the study of human language
What is sociocultural anthropology?
Social anth(British) focuses at a macro level
Cultural anth(American) focuses at a micro level
Sociocultural anth focuses on human behaviour and avoids culture-bound theories
What is ethnography?
It is the description of an individual culture
What is ethnology?
It is the comparative study of cultures that is accomplished using HRAF(human relations area files) database
What is holistic perspective?
It is the view of culture and the relationship between its parts.
What is ethnocentrism?
It is the belief that one’s culture is superior to all others.
What is cultural relativism?
It is the belief that one must suspend judgment on other people’s practices to understand them in their own context/situation.
What is Eric perspective?
It is using your own culture’s concepts/categories to describe another culture
What is emic perspective?
It is using a culture’s own concepts/categories to describe their culture.

Theories that are not theories because they are only bound/only apply to the culture in which they are generated
What is the result of using HRAF database?
The information from individual ethnographies(300) is entered and provides cross-cultural comparisons(ethnology) that leads to theory development.
What is ethnographic research conduct of?
In the field(in situ)—> ethnographers go to their rear arch site
What is gender?
It is a social construct that gives guidelines for our social identity and behaviour
