Chapter 1 Flashcards
Adaptive Radiation
The divergence of a single group or species into a series of distinct, but related, groups or species, each of them suited to survive in its specific niche
Genetic Diversity
Not all members of the species are the same, and these traits can be passed to offspring
Fixed Trait
an allele that is the only variant for that gene that exists in a population
frequency is at 100 %
Ancestral Characteristic
a trait inherited from a common ancestor within a clade, and has undergone little change since
Derived characteristic
A trait that has been modified since the common ancestor
Genotype
the genetic makeup of an organism
Phenotype
the observable traits of an organism
Genome
an organisms complete set of genetic material
Species
a group of genetically compatible, interbreeding natural populations that are genetically isolated from other groups
Transcription factors
proteins involved in transcription of DNA to RNA
gene
the basic unit of heredity passed from a parent to offspring
Trancription
the process by which a cell makes an RNA copy of DNA
Translation
the process by which a cell makes proteins using the genetic information carried in mRNA
Natural Selection
the process by which organisms that are better adapted and suited to their environment survive and reproduce more
