Chapter 1 Flashcards
Homeostasis
The maintenance of the body’s internal environment
Negative feedback
A mechanism/process that negates or opposes some change in the homeostasis
Homeostatic control mechanisms
Variables that produce a change in the body
What are the 3 independent components of control mechanisms
Receptor: monitors the environment and responds to changes (stimuli)
Control center: determines the set point at which the variable is maintained
Effector: provides the means to respond to the stimuli
Anterior ( or ventral)
Describes the front/ direction towards the front of the body
Posterior ( or dorsal)
Describes the back/ direction toward the back of the body
Superior (cranial)
A position above higher than another part of the body
Inferior (or caudal)
Position below or lower than another part of the body; near or toward the tail
Dorsal body
Contains and protects organs in the posterior of the body
Cranial cavity
In the dorsal body and houses the brain
Spinal cavity
In the dorsal body and houses the spinal cord
Ventral body
Contains and protects organs in the anterior of the body
Thoracic cavity
In the ventral body and is enclosed by the rib cage and contains the heart and lungs
Abdominopelvic cavity
In the ventral body and contains the digestive and reproductive organs of the body
Cranium
Skull
