chapter 1 Flashcards
What is science?
The use of inquiry to know more about the natural world
What is Biology?
The study of life
List the characteristics of life.
Contain cells, Order, Respond to the environment, Process energy, Reproduction, Homeostasis (Regulation)
The levels of biology (smallest to largest)
Cell, Tissues, Organs, Organ systems, Organism, Population, Community, Ecosystem, Biosphere
What characteristics do eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells have in common?
All cells are enclosed by a membrane and DNA holds their genetic information
Prokaryotes
simpler, smaller, and does not contain a nucleus or other membrane-enclosed organelles
Eukaryotes
has membrane-enclosed organelles, including the nucleus
What types of organisms are prokaryotic?
Bacteria, Archaea
What types of organisms are eukaryotic?
Animals, fungi, plants, protists
What are the taxonomic groups that we use to classify living organisms? (most to least general)
Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, species
(Dumb Kings Play Chess On Fine Glass Squares)
Describe the role that DNA plays in the growth, development, and reproduction.
All of those things are controlled by DNA
The steps of the scientific method in order.
Observation, Question, Hypothesis, Prediction, Experiment, Results (Data Analysis)
What does it mean that a hypothesis must be testable and falsifiable?
Testable: must be able to be tested experimentally
Falsifiable: must be able to be shown as incorrect
Describe what Darwin meant by “descent with modification” and “natural selection.”
descent with modification: Organisms are modified descendants of common ancestors
Natural selection: the environment “selects” for the propagation of beneficial traits
Chromosome
structures in cell that consist of DNA and hold genes
