Chapter 02 Flashcards
What is physical activity?
Any bodily movement that contributes to daily energy expenditure. It is positively associated with physical fitness.
What is exercise?
Planned, structured, and repetitive bodily movement that contributes to daily energy expenditure. Very positively associated with physical fitness, and is a subcategory of physical activity.
What is physical fitness?
A set of attributes that a person has or achieves.
What are the health related components of physical fitness?
Cardio-respiratory endurance Muscular endurance Muscular strength Flexibility Body Composition
What are the skill related components of physical fitness?
Agility Balance Coordination Speed Power Reaction time
Equation for basal metabolic rate? (BMR)
Kcal(sleep) + Kcal(occupation) + Kcal(leisure) = Kcal(total daily physical exercise)
Define MET
Metabolic equivalent test - the amount of oxygen consumed by a person performing physical activity is directly proportional to the energy expended.
How much oxygen per kilogram does MET assume?
3.5ml per kilogram (2.2lb) of bodyweight per minute at rest
Drawbacks of MET?
Only approximations of resting value, and does not take into account variations for age, sex, muscle mass and disease states
How many MET’s for low intensity exercise?
Less than 3
How many MET’s for moderate intensity exercise?
3-6
How many MET’s for vigorous exercise?
More than 6
Two divisions of physical fitness?
Health-related attributes and performance-related attributes
Five health-related components of physical fitness?
- Cardio-respiratory endurance
- Muscular endurance
- Muscular strength
- Flexibility
- Body Composition
Six skill-related components of physical fitness?
- Agility
- Coordination
- Balance
- Power
- Reaction Time
- Speed
In the Health-Related components of physical fitness, what is: Cardiorespiratory endurance?
The ability of the circulatory and respiratory systems to supply oxygen to working muscles during sustained physical activity
In the Health-Related components of physical fitness, what is: Body composition?
The relative amounts of fat mass and fat-free mass in the body
In the Health-Related components of physical fitness, what is: Flexibility?
The range of motion at a joint
In the Health-Related components of physical fitness, what is: Muscular Strength?
The ability of a muscle to exert maximal force
In the Health-Related components of physical fitness, what is: Muscular Endurance?
The ability of a muscle to perform repeated or sustained contractions without fatigue
In the Skill-Related components of physical fitness, what is: Power?
The rate at which work can be performed; performing muscle contractions at high velocity
In the Skill-Related components of physical fitness, what is: Coordination?
The ability to smoothly and accurately perform complex movements
In the Skill-Related components of physical fitness, what is: Balance?
The ability to maintain equilibrium while stationary or moving
In the Skill-Related components of physical fitness, what is: Reaction time?
The amount of time elapsed between the stimulus for movement and the beginning of the movement
