Chapt. 26 -Research Flashcards
type of research that is typically used to test hypotheses- deductive and confirmatory
-use of large, randomized samples, controlled groups, standardized measurements
Quantitative research
Type of research that is inductive, used to generate rathe than test, hypotheses.
- captures the details, uniqueness, and unfettered experiences in clinical work
ex: in depth interviews, case studies, observational research; audio or video tape analysis.
Qualitative research
type of study that examines subjects at a single point in time
- less costly, and most common form of clinical research
- “correlation is not causality”
Cross-sectional studies
type of study that follow families over time
-allowing for greater certainty in causal inference
Longitudinal studies
research that is associated with the classical scientific method
-emphasizes internal validity
randomized controlled group
-considered “gold standard” for establishing empirical support for a given practice intervention
Efficacy research
research that is concerned with the effects of MFT intervention in more naturalistic, or clinically relevant situations
-no random assignment, no control group, less structured
Effectiveness research
For ODD, what treatment(s) are empirically supported?
Parent training, parent management training
For CD and Adolescent delinquency, what type of treatment(s) have been found helpful?
functional family therapy, multisystemic therapy, and Oregon treatment foster care
For ADHD, what type of treatment or methodology is mostly used? helps with symptoms reduction, improved parenting skills, decreased behavioral disruption, and self esteem
Parent Management training (PMT) and medications
What modalities are mostly used for substance used diorders?
Functional family therapy, multisystemic approaches, and mulitdimensional family therapy
What modalities are used for schizophrenic patients?
medication, behavioral family therapy, supportive family therapy, and family systems therapy.
What approach is commonly used for Eating disorder patients?
Structural family therapy: participation in family members to increase positive health behaviors, shifting transactional patterns that maintain patient symptoms
