chap15: modes of reproduction Flashcards
what is aesexual reproduction
the process that results in genetically identical offsprings from only one parent
what is mitosis and what is it’s importance
mitosis is a type of cell division that results in genetically identical cells
it is important for chromosome number to be maintained, allows aesexual reproduction to occur and damaged tissues to be repaired
what are advantages of aesexual reproduction
only one parent is needed, fusion of gametes is not needed
faster than sexual reproduction
beneficial qualities of parent is immediately passed down to offspring since they are genetically identical
what are the disadvantages of aesexual reproduction
no genetic variation, species are not well adapted to changes in the environment
what is sexual reproduction
the fusion of 2 gametes to form a zygote
produces genetically dissimilar offsprings
what is meiosis and why is it important
a type off cell division that produces genetically dissimilar cells that have halved chromosome number
it is importantly to produce haploid gametes and ensure that they’re are genetically dissimilar for greater genetic variation
haploid vs diploid
haploid (gamete) is a cell with 1 set of chromosome
diploid (zygote) is c ell with 2 sets of chromosomes (1 male, 1 female)
what are the advantages of sexual reproduction
offspring will inherit the most beneficial equalities from both parents
there is genetic variation which allows offsprings to be more adapted to changes in its environment
what are the disadvantages of sexual reproduction
2 parents are required, fusion of gametes is needed
method is slower than aesexual reproduction
