Q

Describe the basic sequence of movement production

A
  1. Broadmans area of the parietal cortex integrates sensory stimuli
  2. The prefrontal cortex plans movement
  3. The premotor cortex organizes movement sequences
  4. The motor cortex produces elementary movements

Q

What are the 3 principles of motor system function

A
  1. Movement sequence: complex movements are done sequentially, when one is performed another is being set up
  2. Hierarchy: Different complexities of movements are produced in different brain regions
  3. Parallel processing: one system may produce automatic movements while another system programs adjustments

Q

What is the movement lexicon

A

Pre-set primal movements that exist within our motor systems, if damage occurs to the parietal-motor system, these coordinated movements will be impaired not simply our muscles

Q

What is the function of the globes pallidus of the basal ganglia

A

Inhibits or allows the thalamus to produce movement therefore acting as a control center (volume control theory)

Q

What are the 2 spinal-cord pathways ?

A
  1. Corticobulbar: Projections are sent to the brain stem
    - responsible for facial movements
  2. Corticospinal: projections are sent to the spinal cord
    - responsible for limb, digit and body movements
