Chap. 8 A&P Nervous System Flashcards
The brain and spinal cord are part of the
Centeal nervous system
The peripheral nervous system is composed primarily of the dendrites of sensory neurons and axons of
Motor neurons
Three membranes surrounding and protecting the spinal cord are called
Meninges
The ventral roots of the spinal cord contains axons of
Motor neurons
The brain receives impulses from spinal cord as well as
12 pairs of Cranial nerves
The peripheral nervous system has sensory receptors located in
Sensory organs
In the PNS, glial cells that wrap themselves around neurons are
Schwann cells
Star shaped glial cells with cytoplasm extended into elongated processes to form the blood brain barrier called
Astrocytes
Impulses are conducted away from the cell body by a long extension called
Axon
Chemical substances released at the axon terminals are referred to as
Neurotransmitters
The nervous system is composed of 2 systems
Neurons ( nerve cells)
Axon
What is acetycholine
Neurotransmitter
What is an astrocyte
Type of neuron ( blood brain barrier) keep neurons in place
Central nervous system CNS
Neck up
12 cranial nerves
33 pairs of spinal nerves
3 types of meninges
Duramater ( outer layer)
Arachnoid ( web like layer)
Pia mater ( thin, most inner)
Peripheral nervous system
Afferent: toward brain( sensory neurons)
Efferent: away from brain
Motor nerves
What is the reflex arch
Never reaches the brain, only hits the spinal cord
Example: when you burn yourself and you remember that you burned yourself with that item after a long time
PNS system
Autotomic
Heartrate
Resp. Rate
Digestion
Somatic
Voluntary
Sympathetic SNS
Fight or flight
Epinephrine
Norepinephrine
Cortisol
(Chemoreceptors affected B1,B2, A1,A2
Norepinephrine affects which chemoreceptor
A1 affects cardiac blood vessel dialation/constriction
Remember one heart
Epinephrine affects which chemoreceptor
B1
Think of one heart
B2 affects lungs ( you have 2 lungs)
