Chap 5 Flashcards
Cognition
Thought is more than just that of which we are conscious. The brain processes and makes decisions about the importance of various stimuli below the level of conscious awareness
Information processing model
States that the brain in code stores and retrieves information much like a computer
Abstract thinking
Develops over the lifespan. Early cognitive development is limited by brain maturation. Culture genes and environment influence cognitive development.
Piglet stages of cognitive development
Sensorimotor preoperational concrete operational and formal operational
Sensorimotor stage
Focuses on manipulating the environment to meet the physical needs through circular reactions. Object permanence and the stage
Concrete operational stage
Focuses on understanding the feelings of others and manipulating physical objects
Formal operational stage
Focuses on abstract thought and problem-solving
Mental set
Pattern of approach for a given problem. Inappropriate mental set may negatively impact problem solving
Functional fixedness
Tendency to use objects only in the way they are normally utilized may create barriers to problem-solving
Deductive reasoning
Deriving conclusions from general rules
Inductive reasoning
Driving generalizations from evidence
Heuristics
Sure cuts or rules of thumb used to make decisions
Biases
Exist want an experimenter a decision maker is unable to objectively evaluate information
Theory of multiple intelligence
There are seven Arizona telogen’s including linguistic. Logical mathematical. Musical. Visual spatial, bodily kinesthtic Interpersonal. Intrapersonal
Alertness
Being awake. Beta and alpha waves dominate on the eeg
Sleep stages
Stage one is light sleep and dominated by theta waves.
Stage two is deeper sleep and includes theta waves sleep spindles and K complexes
Stage 3 and 4 deep sleep or slow wave sleep. Talk to women dominate
-most sleep disorders occur here
Nonrapid eye movement sleep
Consolidation declarative memories
