Social facilitation
The tendency of people to perform at a different level based on the fact that others are around

The loss of self-awareness in large groups which can lead to drastic changes in behavior
Can lead to antinormative behavior or behavior against the norm
Bystander effect
Observation that one in a group of individuals are less likely to respond to a person in need
People less likely notice danger because of social etiquette (rude to watch others)

Degree of responsibility felt by the bystander (related or victim deserve life)

Social influence on an individual by others they consider equals
Group polarization
Tendency toward making decisions in a group that are more extreme than the thoughts of the individual group members

Groupthink
Tendency for groups to make decisions based on ideas and solutions that arise within the group without considering outside ideas. Ethics may be disturbed as pressure is created to conform to remain loyal to the group

Assimilation
Process by which a group or individuals culture begins to melt into another culture
Multiculturalism
Encouragement of multiple cultures within a community to enhance diversity
Subcultures
Group of people within a culture that distinguish themselves from the primary culture to which they belong

Norms
What determine the boundaries of acceptable behavior within society
Agents of socialization
Family pure school religious affiliation and other groups to promote socialization
Stigma
Extreme disapproval or dislike of a person or group based on perceived differences from the rest of society
Deviance
Violation of norms rules or expectations within a society
Conformity
Changing believes or behaviors in order to fit into a group or society
Also known as majority influence
Compliance
When individuals change their behavior based on the request of others. Methods of gaining compliance include the foot in the door technique and door in the face technique lowball technique and that’s not all technique among others
Obedience
Change in behavior based on a command from someone seen as an authority figure
Attitudes
Tendencies toward expression of positive or negative feelings or evaluations of something
There are affective behavioral and cognitive component to attitudes
Functional attitudes theory
States that there are four functional areas of attitudes that serve individuals in life knowledge ego expression adaptability and ego defense
Learning theory
States the attitudes are developed through forms of learning : direct contact direct interaction direct instruction and conditioning
Elaboration likelihood model
States that attitudes are formed and change there different routes of information processing based on the degree of elaboration

Social cognitive theory
States that attitudes are formed through observation of behavior personal factors and environment
Behavior develops their direct observation and replication of the actions of others in tandem with the influence of personal factors and the environment in which we observed behavior

Being in the presence of others will significantly raise arousal which enhances the ability to perform tasks one is already good at or simple tasks and hinders the performance of less familiar tasks / complex tasks
