Why did the French set up a colony?
French merchants wanted the wealth that came from the fur trade. French missionaries wanted to convert the Native Americans to the Catholic religion.
When and where was the first French settlement?
Quebec in 1608.
Why did the Dutch set up a colony?
To profit from the fur trade.
What was the advantage to New Amsterdam’s location?
Good place for trade since it’s on the Hudson River. Can easily get supplies and furs.
When and where did the Dutch settle their own colony?
New Amsterdam (NYC) in early 1600’s.
Why did New France grow slowly?
Most French people didn’t want to move to New France.
How did conflicts with the Dutch affect Native Americans in New Netherland?
Colonists sent out an army that destroyed Native American villages all over New Netherland. The Algonquin tribe had almost been wiped out.
How did French explorers try to reach the king’s goals?
The king didn’t want to lose New France. The explorers went looking for the Northwest Passage and tried to start a settlement near the mouth of the Mississippi.
What did the French trade with the Native Americans?
The French traded blankets and cooking pots for furs and animal skins.
