What is a pilgrim?
A pilgrim is a person who makes a journey for religious reasons.
What is the Mayflower Compact?
It was an agreement among the men on the Mayflower. Itexplained the laws. If you signed the agreement you agreed to follow the laws.
What is majority rule?
If more than half of the people agreed to a law or a decision, everyone had to follow it.
Why was the Mayflower Compact important?
- It kept order since there was no government.2. Fair laws would be made for the good of the colony.
What is self-government?
The ability to govern, or rule, themselves.
Where did the Pilgrims land?
Plymouth, MA. They were headed for Virginia but storms blew them off course.
What was the name of the ship the Pilgrims sailed on?
The Mayflower.
Who helped the Pilgrims?
Samoset and Squanto (Abenaki and Wampanoag Native Americans).
What did the Natives teach the Pilgrims?
- How to plant crops (squash, corn & pumpkins).2. How to fish.3. How to trade.
Why was is important for the Natives to help the Pilgrims?
Almost half the Pilgrims died the 1st winter. The needed to learn how to survive in the new land.
What happened as more colonists began to settle in New England?
- The colonists started to settle in NA lands.2. The colonists didn’t see a need to cooperate or be friendly with the NA.3. Fighting broke out and trading stopped.4. Tribes began fighting among themselves as their lands were getting smaller. Wanted control over hunting grounds.
Why did the English settle in New England?
They were blown off their course to Virginia by storms. They ended up at Plymouth, MA.
Why did the Pilgrims leave Europe?
Religious freedom.
Who is William Bradford and what did he do?
He was one of Plymouth’s early governors. He helped make peace with the locals. Later he supported a war to push the Natives our of New England.
How did growing troubles between English colonists and Natives Americans change life in New England?
It made life harder. The colonists lost their trade partners. Fighting broke out.
