Chap 30- Respiratory Treatments Flashcards
Oxygen therapy primarily used to reverse…
hypoxemia
3 Goals of O2 Therapy
- Improve tissue oxygenation
- Decrease work of breathing in pt’s w/ dyspnea
- Decrease work of heart in pt’s with cardiac disease
It is important to start at the lowest flow of O2, then increase as needed. T or F
True
O2 ordered in flow
O2 orded in concentration
Flow- L/min
Conc- %
Nurse Assessment for monitoring Oxygen
Pt color
alertness
heart rate
breathing effort
Aim of O2 therapy is to keep
PaO2 @ -
SpO2 @ -
PaO2-Above 60
SpO2- Above 93 %
Is O2 flammable or combustible?
Combustible
Why is high o2 toxic to COPD pts?
They do not have the alveoli to process the excess O2 coming in.
Methods of O2 Delivery
Nasal Cannula
Simple Mask
Non rebreather Mask
Venturi Mask
most common method of delivery; delivers lower conc of O2 (1-6 L or 22-44 %); mixes w/ room air
Nasal Cannula
delivers moderate conc of O2; 6-10 L; given to ppl who need higher conc of O2
Simple Mask (known to be hot/claustrophobic- difficult to eat/drink)
mask that delivers high concentration (10-15 L); typically given to critically ill patients
Non Rebreather Mask
How long should patients be on high conc O2?
No more than 24 hrs; pt can begin to lose the muscular ability that helps them breathe
mask that blends room air w/ a FIXED precise concentration of oxygen
Venturi Mask
_______ & ________ are signs of decreased oxygenation status
Confusion and changes in LOC
