Chap 30- Respiratory Terms to Know Flashcards
round sac-like structures in the lungs through which gas exchange occurs
alveoli
Absence of respiration; a sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts;
apnea
Lab test that provides more specific info concerning patient’s acid–base status & response to oxygen therapy
ABG
(Arterial Blood Gas)
Percent of hemoglobin saturated with oxygen; measured by pulse oximeter
Arterial oxygen saturation (Sp02)
Collapse of alveoli
atelectasis
Narrowing of the bronchioles caused by tightening of the smooth muscles in the airways
bronchospasm
The percentage of oxygen being inhaled which is increased with oxygen administration
FiO2
fraction of inspired oxygen
coughing up blood or blood-stained mucus from the respiratory tract
Hemoptysis
Abnormally high carbon dioxide in the blood
hypercapnia
Rapid and deep breathing, resulting in removal of too much carbon dioxide from the blood; indicated by decreased PaCO2
Hyperventilation
Breathing is too shallow/ slow; adequately removes carbon dioxide from the blood indicated by elevated PaCO2 (breathing this way, prevents the body from exchanging enough oxygen and carbon dioxide)
Hypoventilation
Below normal amount of oxygen in the blood
hypoxemia
Decreased amount of oxygen available to the tissues/cells
Hypoxia
Amount of oxygen in the blood
pulse oximetry
Use of a pillow to immobilize a wound when a patient has had abdominal or thoracic surgery
splinting
