CHAP 3 Flashcards
– for supplying the air/fuel mixture to the combustion
chamber of a combustion engine
Carburetion
– space inside an engine block and cylinder
head.
Combustion Chamber
- to create pressure in the combustion chamber.
Compression
– the ratio of volume displaced by the piston to
the volume at the cylinder head of the engine.
Compression Ratio
– volume displaced by the piston as it moves up and
down the combustion chamber commonly expressed in liters.
Displacement
– a substance either gasoline or diesel that has an energy to
produce power when ignited
Fuel
– unit of power equivalent to 746 watts
Horsepower
– electrical component of gasoline engine that
produces a high voltage arc or spark across the air gap of the spark
plug to ignite combustible mixture of fuel and air
Ignition System
– substance used to reduce friction, heat, and wear
when applied as a thin film between solid surface.
Lubricant
– cylindrical-shaped engine part that moves up and
down in the combustion chamber to displace volume and create
compression.
Piston
– rate of consumption of energy from fuel which
produces work per unit time through reciprocating motion and
converts it to rotational motion at a given torque and speed.
