Torso
Chest, abdomen, and pelvis
Mediastinum
The structure that divides the two halves of the chest cavity and contains the heart, trachea, esophagus, vena cava and aorta
Pleura
The thin, saclike structure that surrounds each lung
Pleural space
The potential space that exists between the visceral and parietal pleura in the chest
Pneumothorax
An escape of air into the pleural space; often associated with trauma
Spontaneous pneumothorax
An escape of air into the pleural space without any associated trauma
Hemothorax
Blood in the pleural space
Flail chest
A chest injury characterized by two or more adjacent ribs that are broken in two or more places
Crepitus
A grating noise or sensation felt when broken bone ends rub together
Paradoxical movement
The abnormal movement of the chest wall commonly associated with a flail chest
Sucking chest wound
An open chest wound that is characterized by a sucking wound each time the patient inhales
Tension pneumothorax
The restriction of breathing and circulation due to a buildup of air pressure in the pleural space

Shift in the trachea to the opposite side
Jugular vein distension (JVD)
Bulging of the neck veins
