Chap 22 Flashcards
What does the thoracic duct drain?
Drains lymph from most of the body (all areas except the upper right quadrant) into the left subclavian vein.
What does the right lymphatic duct drain?
Drains lymph from the upper right side of the body into the right subclavian vein.
What is the structure of lymphatic capillaries?
Thin walls with overlapping endothelial cells that form one-way valves.
What is the function of lymphatic capillaries?
Highly permeable; allow interstitial fluid, proteins, and pathogens to enter but prevent their exit.
What is the structure of the thymus gland?
Two lobes; located in the mediastinum, above the heart.
What is the function of the thymus gland?
Site of T cell maturation; most active during childhood.
What is the structure of the spleen?
Largest lymphatic organ, located in the upper left abdomen.
What is the function of the spleen?
Filters blood, removes old red blood cells, stores platelets, and provides an immune response.
What are the similarities between lymph and interstitial fluid?
Both are derived from blood plasma and contain water, solutes, and immune cells.
What is the difference between lymph and interstitial fluid?
Lymph is interstitial fluid that has entered lymphatic capillaries.
What does lymph in lacteals appear like and why?
Appears white because it absorbs dietary lipids.
Where are lacteals located?
Villi of the small intestine.
What is the function of lacteals?
Absorb dietary lipids and fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) into the lymphatic system.
