  • 1812, plot of land opposite Coltman street
  • Purchased in 1820 and houses built on it
  • 1826, 27 different residents
  • The rich lived there
  • 1825-1873 the road was a toll road that connected Hessle and Hull
  • 1870’s, began to expand West
  • 1870’s, Commercial shops start to open
  • Opening of Albert Dock
  • Lead to more housing being built
  • Tram service meant more people could commute further to work
  • Rapid expansion in the 1880’s
  • Houses were small and filthy
  • 1885, the front of Hessle road was mostly shop keepers

- Peaked as a shopping area - Huge community - 1920's, large companies start to buy out small shops - 1920/30, cinema's were built - 1920's, busses start to be introduced

- Two-up two-down houses - slums - Landlords knew demolition was inevitable so they refused to repair houses - Outside toilets - Strong sense of community - 17.3% of Hull's population lived half a mile from the dock

- The 3rd Cod war started in 1975 after Iceland put a 200 mile exclusion Zone around it's waters to stop others fishing there - It was illegal protectionism - Made other European countries angry - Royal Navy sent to protect trawlers from Icelandic boats - Iceland threatened to stop a very important NATO base - America pressured Britain to stop fishing there - Catastrophic for Hull Ports - Almost all fisherman were put out of work
