Changes in the Great Plains Flashcards
What happened to farm size?
There has been an increase in farm size. This is because more people left the Great Plains and land was bought over by the remaining farmers to increase output. Everywhere, North Dakota.
What has happened to technology? (3)
Even more technology is now used such as precision farming (where satellites control irrigation) and increased machinery.
New technology such as tractors allows farmers to increase speed and efficiency, which provides better profits for some farmers.
Fewer workers so less wages for farmers to pay.
Advantages to chemicals and pesticides?
There has been an increase in the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Chemical fertilisers have also enabled crops to be grown on marginal areas with poorer quality soil. Additionally, fewer plants are being eaten by pests so more crops to sell
Disadvantages to chemicals and pesticides?
However, disadvantages of fertilisers and pesticides are that they are harmful to wildlife e.g. bees. Furthermore, Polluted river water leads to problems such as algae bloom which starves the river of oxygen affecting wildlife
Explain what money from the government has done
More money is now being given to farmers from the government. For example, the Environmental Quality Incentives Program. This program provides financial and technical assistance to agricultural producers to address natural resource concerns. This ensures a higher standard of living for farmers and makes sure the land is looked after properly
What has diversification done?
Diversification has taken place, so there is more accommodation for tourists. This makes it more profitable as farmers make money elsewhere too. Farms will now usually have a farm shop.
