What is an anticyclone?
An anticyclone is an area of high pressure where the air is descending
Characteristics of an anticyclone? (3)
Air sinks and diverges at the surface.
Wind blows clockwise in the northern hemisphere
Brings clear skies, dry weather and little wind
Characteristics of a summer anti cyclone
Hot, sunny days
Cool nights, can cause dew or fog
Characteristics of a winter anticyclone?
Cold days and frosty nights
Risk of fog and frost due to lack of cloud cover
Advantages to an anticyclone in summer?
There are no clouds so it will be warm which will benefit tourism.
The wind will be slow which is good for days out and picnics.
Advantages to anticyclones in winter?
There will be few clouds to trap heat so it will be cold which will drive up heating bills.
The wind will be slow so it’ll reduce wind chill
Disadvantages to an anticyclone in summer?
The dry conditions will mean crops will suffer.
There may be high UV due to lack of clouds leading to skin damage.
Disadvantages to anticyclones in winter?
The dry conditions mean it will be frosty which will damage fruit crops
There will be few clouds so no rain and perfect for sports activities
