Members operating on roofs should communicate the following to IC
- Configuration of building
- Fire showing out windows
A how many and location
B. not visible from street
C. Whether exposure affected - Color and volume of smoke from windows
- Persons trapped and exact location
- Location of stairways fire escapes and party wall balconies
- Building fronts more than one street and whether access for apparatus
- Whether there is any difference in height from front to rear , side to side
- Evidence of unusual heat smoke fire in cockloft
- Location parapet dividing walls
10 presence of heating ducts vent ducts AC unites and h2o tanks on roof
The emergency channel is
Channel 16
5 watt
If emergency alert tone on a switch to 16 it will continue unless deactivated
What are the 6 situations that MAYDAY should be transmitted ?
1 COLLAPSE IMMINENT 2. STRUCTURAL COLLAPSE HAS OCCURRED 3. UNCONSCIOUS 4LIFE THREATENING INJURY 5Missing member 6. LOST OR TRAPPED
Note also transmit mayday when LOST , TRAPPED AND MISSING MEMBER FOUND
SO THAT MAKES 10x mayday
If collapse imminent mayday is transmitted the member should transmit to member how and what info
MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY Ladder 54 roof to command MAYDAY
IC RESPONDS command to ladder 54 go ahead with your mayday
LADDER 54 roof to command MAYDAY - COLLAPSE IMMINENT and provide location of imminent collapse and your location
When transmitting a structural collapse mayday you should provide what info
Collapse has occurred and following info :
- Location and extent of collapse
- Number and nature of injuries
- If anyone trapped
When member discovers a unconscious member or member with life threatening injury member should provide following info
LUNIR. FAR
- location
- Unit of member
- Nature and extent if injuries
- I’d of injured member
- Resources needed

When a mayday is transmitted for a missing member include following info
LUNA. FAIR
- Last known location or reference point
- Unit the member is working in that tour
- Name of affected member
- Assignment

If a missing member is located transmit the following info with mayday
Location
I’d of member(s) reported missing
Any imminent conditions affecting member(s)
Resource needed to reach safety
If mayday or urgent given normal HT transmission may resume
Completion of emergency message or signal unless otherwise ordered by IC
Mayday
Transmission is indication that life- threatening situation has developed
If possible transmitting member press EAB BUTTON before giving mayday
After message acknowledged the member can deactivate EAB “ beacon “ tone IS NO LONGER REQUIRED
If a member becomes lost or trapped give a MAYDAY and provide following info:
Lost or trapped member shall not activate pass until all vital info has been given to IC
PROVIDE:
1. Location if known , if unknown provide last recognizable reference point
2. Identity and number of members involved
3. Any imminent conditions that might affect trapped members .. Such as fire , air
A member who finds the trapped or lost member(s) provide the following info
- Identity of members involved
- Location
- Any imminent conditions that might affect trapped/lost members .. FAIR
- Resource needed to reach safety
Urgent a used to indicate
- That a member has suffered a serious injury that is not immediately life threatening or to inform members of a serious change I’m conditions
Following situations warrant a URGENT
1 Non Life Threatening Injury
- Transmission of Signal 10-70
- Interior attack discontinued
- Danger of collapse
- Fire entering exposure
- Loss of water
- Anytime a change on operations will severely impact an operation or safety members
Member transmitting an Urgent message for a member. with a non- life threatening injury should transmit the following info
1 location
- Unit and identity of the injured member
- Nature and extent of injuries
- Resources needed
When transmitting an URGENT for a 10-70 include the following info
first arriving engine company is unable to secure a positive water source first ECC should press EAB and contact IC
- Tell IC urgent 10-70
- Provide IC with Info to assist
- Urgent message to dispatcher
IC will announce over ht when positive water source obtained and to dispatcher
Urgent .. Interior attack discontinued
IC decides institute exterior attack .. IC shall have members back out of building
After this message all members back out and IC will contact each unit individual sly by ht to confirm
IC conduct roll call immediately
A member becoming aware of a structural problem indicating the danger of collapse shall transmit an URGENT “COLLAPSE FEARED “ and include the following .
Location
Conditions discovered
A member discovering fire extending into an exposure and any delay may considerable enlarge the fire problem shall transmit the URGENT FIRE EXTENDING and include
Location
Nature of extension
A member aware of a loss of water including water loss due to a confirmed burst length should transmit the URGENT - WATER LOSS and include
Nature of the problem
Identity of units with lines affected
A member becoming aware of a changing condition that will severely impact an operation or the safety of members shall immediately press their EAB and transmit a URGENT and provide following info
Nature of problem
Location
Members/unit affected
Any officer or safety team member hearing the EMERGENCY ALERT TONE followed by a “MAYDAY” or “URGENT” message an realizes that it is not being acknowledged by the IC MUST INITIATE THE FOLLOWING
- Acknowledge the signal and ascertain nature
2. Promptly relay all info to IC
“Emergency alert tone assisted rescue”
- Max volume output regardless of missing members volume position
Requires only one HT
IC announces and designates new primary tactical ( not same channel of missing member)
All members except the member designated to produce alert tone are to operate on new primary tactical
Designated member remote from search activity can be ICP
When shall the emergency alert tone be discontinued when using emergency alert tone assisted rescue
When definite location of member has been determined
FEEDBACK ASSISTED RESCUE IS CREATED BY?
Designated member 1 assigned 2 HT 2. Ht placed on channel of missing Member was op 3. Transmitting button of one ht pressed 4. HT speakers held 1 to 2 inches apart This distance will produce loudest tone up to a mile away Timer out every 30 seconds must rekey
HI RISE BUILDINGS / hospitals

Because RF MAY effect medical equipment members during non- emergency visits to hospitals restrict the use of HT and other RF transmissions in patient care areas of hospitals
Except in emergency members shall leave patient area prior to transmitting via HT
HT SUBWAY RELAY
IC may use repeater system on command channel
IC may direct certain members to switch to ch.14(primary repeater ) or channel 15. ( secondary repeater )
Effective HT MUST BE ESTABLISHED REGARDLESS IF REPEATER IS USED
HT ARE POOR LEVEL TO LEVEL
STRAIGHT LINE FAIR TO POOR
HT USE with SCBA
- Remove mic from the harness clip
- Place microphone directly on voicemitter
- After transmission place mic back on harness clip
Cell phone use
emergency use
After all other FD means of communication have considered ..ie. post radio HT relay. 800 MHZ radio sound powered phones
Note excess traffic on ht not a reason for cell phone use
The following is mandatory :
- IC notified and approve
- Members using cell phone must continue to monitor ht
Note : cell phones may be used to provide additional means of communication other than emergency situations ie BISP hotline
