🡪Compliance: involves going along w explicit requests made by others
🡪Obedience: submitting to the demands of a person in authority in an unequal relationship
What is the definition of social influence?
The many ways people affect one another, including changes in attitudes, beliefs, feelings, and behavior resulting from the comments, actions or even the mere presence of others.
What is the difference between normative and informational social influence?
Informational social influence = viewing actions of others as informative abt what is correct/proper
Normative social influence: conform w others to avoid disapproval/other social sanctions
What is the ideomotor action?

What concept has the following definition?
(Non)conscious imitation of someone else’s behavior
?
How do group characteristics influence conformity?
- Larger the size, greater the influence – only up to 4 ppl.
- In unanimous groups, there is more pressure to conform than those w even 1 dissenter – having an ally makes it easier
- Expertise + status of group members chose influence
- If it’s hard to pinpoint reason why different opinions in groups, informational + normative influence are lessened
What factor can eliminate normative social influence?
Anonymity
What is the definition of internalization?
Private acceptance of a proposition, orientation, ideology. Informational social influence often leads to it.
What are the characteristics of a ‘tight’ culture?
- strong norms regarding how ppl should behave + Ø toleration of departure from norms
- Gvt are autocratic, dictatorial, sharp media control + higher monitoring, more punishment for disobedience
Ex: India, Germany, China, SK, Japan, Portugal, UK
What are examples of countries with loose cultures?
Greece, Hungary, the Netherlands are more tolerant towards deviance
Do men or women conform more?
Women > men in conformity
Women + men conform in domains where they have less knowledge
What are three reason-based approaches to compliance?
- Norm of reciprocity: doing a favor for smb who then feels obligated to do favor in return
If favor not returned, violation of social norm + risk social condemnation - Reciprocal concession technique (door-in-the-face technique) to get target person to make concession too
U ask for favor that other refuses, then ask for a smaller one you’re really interested in receiving so the person asked will feel compelled to math concession to honor the norm of reciprocity. - Foot-in-the-door technique: a person first gets someone to agree to a small request before making a bigger one
What are two emotion-based approaches to compliance?
- Get target in good mood
=> increase compliance bc mood maintenance + interpretation of request - Desire for negative state relief: idea that ppl engage in certain actions, such as agreeing to a request, to relieve their neg feelings + feel better abt themselves
What are the norm-based approach to compliance?
Descriptive norms indicate how ppl actually behave in specific contexts
Prescriptive norms how ppl should behave = injunctive norms
