What is the course of action if a mechanical discrepancy is discovered during taxi for takeoff?
Aircraft may not depart unless:
- The discrepancy is deferrable.
- It does not require any maintenance action
- The captain determines that the flight can safely proceed
No AML entry shall be made until on the ground and aircraft is parked*
Which events require a AML discrepancy entry?
- Any encounter with severe/extreme turbulence
- Overweight/hard landings/high side-load/locked brake landings
- Actual or suspected Bird strikes
- Actual or suspected lightning strike
- Smoke, fire, or fire-warning during flight
Are flight crews authorized to perform maintenance functions?
Only if an >M MEL item

Categories for maximum times between MEL deferral and repair
Cat A - time interval specified in MEL remarks
Cat B - within three calendar days, excluding day of discovery
Cat C - within ten calendar days, excluding day of discovery
Cat D - within 120 calendar days, excluding day of discovery (this cat excludes NEF items)
Cat’s B/C can be extended
Cat’s A/D cannot be extended
