Ch.9 Hemoglobin, PCV, and RBC endices Flashcards
PCV
the percentage of whole blood that is compromised of RBCs
what are the layers in a microhematocrit tube once spun?
packed RBCs
buffy coat
plasma
How do you estimate the RBC count if all you have is the PCV? (equation)
Divide the PCV by 6
What is the PCV used for?
to indicate anemia
What can a high PCV indicate?
dehydration
or polycythemia
What is the normal PCV range for dogs?
37 - 55%
What is a normal PCV range for cats?
30 - 45 %
What is the functional unit of the RBC?
Hemoglobin
When does hemoglobin synthesis occur?
During the maturation of RBCs in the bone marrow
Once in circulation, there are 4 different types of hemoglobin, what are they?
- OXYhemoglobin
- METHEMOglobin
- SULFhemoglobin
- CARBOXYhemoglobin
What is a normal hemoglobin value range in dogs?
12-20
What is a normal hemoglobin value range in cats?
11-16
What are the three different RBC indices?
- MCHC - mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration
- MCV- mean corpuscular volume
- MCH- mean corpuscular hemoglobin
What does the MCV measure?
the average size of the RBCs
What does the MCH measure?
it is the mean weight of hemoglobin (Hb) contained in the average RBC (measured in picograms- pg)
