CH.9-2 Brain Flashcards
What are the major parts of a brain, and label them
Cerebrum, Thalamus, Hypothalamus, Midbrain, Pituitary Glands, Pons, Medulla Oblongata, cerebellum, Spinal Cord
Cerebrum
Controls our ability to read, write, speak, think, remember, feel, and move
Interpretation of sensory information
Motor function
Four external lobes: frontal, parietal, temporal and
occipital lobes
Thalamus
Egg shaped
Receives and passes sensory info (pain, pleasure, pressure) and afferent nerve transmission
Sorts out, edits and relays impulses of similar function
Hypothalamus
Controls autonomic nervous system (involuntary) and hormone production by acting on pituitary glands
Hypothalamus is principle between nervous and endocrine systems
Brain Stem
The section between the brain and spinal cord
* A pathway for axons between higher and lower brain centres
* Controls automatic behaviours necessary for survival
* Divided into three parts:
– Midbrain
– Pons
– Medulla oblongata
Midbrain
Reflex centre for head and eye movements in response to sight and sounds
Pons
In brainstem between medulla oblongata and midbrain
helps regulate breathing
All sensory and motor fibres pass through
Medulla Oblongata
most inferior part of brain
where crossover of nerves occurs
Cardiovascular, respiratory, and vasomotor section
also helps regulate sneezing, swallowing, and vomiting
Cerebellum
Coordination, posture, and balance
