CH.5 Cell Biology Flashcards
describe the fluid mosaic membrane structure and its components
the fluid mosaic is made up of a phospholipid bilayer with cholesterol and proteins. it is fluid as it can move around and parts can come in and out, mosaic as it is made up of many things
How doe the structure of the cell membrane effect permeability?
The phospholipids are tightly packed together, and the membrane has a hydrophobic interior
small non-polar molecules are most likely to pass through
Describe diffusion
passive transport from molecules in high concentration to low concentration across the cell membrane
Describe facilitated diffusion
the diffusion of a substance across a membrane with the aid of specific transport proteins
Describe osmosis
the movement (diffusion) of water through a selectively
permeable membrane, from an area of high to low water
concentration
form of facilitated transportation using aquaporins
what will happen if a red blood cell is put in a hypotonic solution
the blood cell becomes lysed from more water entering then leaving and will burst
what will happen if a red blood cell is put in a isotonic solution
the blood cell will remain proper as there in the same amount of water entering as leaving
what will happen if a red blood cell is put in a hypertonic solution
the blood cell becomes shrivelled as more water leaves than enters
what will happen if a red blood cell is put in a hypertonic solution
the blood cell becomes shrivelled as more water leaves than enters
what is Active transport
Active transport is the movement of a substance across a
cell membrane against its concentration gradient and requires ATP
what is phagocytosis
An active process by which a cell can take in large pieces of solid material. it is used to destroy unwanted materials or organisms
what is pinocytosis
a mechanism by which cells can take in liquids and nutrients
aka endocytosis
what is exocytosis
vesicles fuse with cell membrane to release materials into the extracellular fluid
