CH.6 Tissue Structure and Function Flashcards
Define tissue and describe the importance of tissue
level organization to an organism
Tissues are A group of integrated cells with a common structure & function
They increases the efficiency as different shapes are better
suited to carry out different functions
Describe the structure and function of epithelial tissue
3 basic structures, squamous, cuboidal, and columnar
main function secretion and absorption, protection, control permeability, provide sensation
Describe the structure and function of muscle tissue
Cells that shorten
Three types:
–Skeletal muscle
–Cardiac muscle
–Smooth muscle
Describe the structure and function of connective tissue
Generally, composed of a small number of cells and a large
amount of extracellular material called the matrix
Describe the structure and function of nervous tissue
Found in brain, spinal cord, nerves
Supporting cells are called neuroglia
2 groups, CNS, PNS
types of connective tissues
embryonic
-Mesenchyme
-Mucous
mature
-loose (areolar, adipose, reticular)
-dense (regular, irregular, elastic)
-cartilage(hyaline, fibrocartilage, elastic)
-bone
-liquid (blood, lymph)
