CH8: Spills Flashcards
What is the most common form of accident?
Spills!
What should yu consider before approaching a spill? (4)
Size of spill (can the spill kit handle it?)
Is it toxic?
Consequences for inhalation, touching, or ingestion?
Are you wearing proper PPE?
What should be considered with paper towels?
Are the materials compatible with the spill material
Appropriate PPE for spills:
Goggles
Skin-covering clothes
chemically resistant overalls
Chem-resistant gloves
hair cover
Chem-resistant boots or shoe cover
Lab spill kits should have:
PPE
Absorbent mateirlas (socks, pillows, granulates)
Neutralizers
Mercury decontamination powder
Tools (dust pan and trash bags)
First response of a Chem Spill:
Minimize the spill with absorbent material
Notify people around you
Stay on location if safe
If you don’t know the chemical, close off the area and call for help
Liquid chemical spills procedure
*if small, wipe with paper towels starting from the edge
*If hazardous or large, use chem-kit before cleaning with paper towels or broom
*Dispose all contaminated items in disposable bags
Solid Material Spill Procedure
Use a dust pan and brush
If very fine, wet with approved solvent and wipe from edge in.
Final Clean up after a spill
*check all contaminated items are functional, clean, and valid
*dispose of any non-funtional items
*Remove all PPE and wash skin, *contaminated clothes may be disposed
*All contaminated items are to be disposed.
Final Actions after Spills procedure
Write up a report
work with local safety commities
Evaluate what went wrong to avoid in the future
Radioactive Liquid Spills Procedure
*if small, wipe with paper towels starting from the edge
*If hazardous or large, use chem-kit before cleaning with paper towels or broom
*After cleaning, check everything with a Geiger counter. If radiaoctive, use cold material and mix well
*You may need to replace surfaces
Solid Radioactive Material Spills
*Use a dustpan or wet if too fine and wipe
*If radiation is not removed, use cold material and check using a Geiger
Final Radiation Spill Cleaning
*Measure Radioactivity in disposal bag and calculate the radioactivity/kg.
*Put into fridge or freezer
*Once radiation is reached background, take off radioactivity label and dispose
Final Actions for Radioactive Spills
Write a report: Only allowed by documented trained personnel only
Biohazard spill procedure
*double glove and spray the whole area with disinfectant. Leave for 20 mins
* wipe from edges using paper towels
* All waste should be sterilized using an autoclave
*Clean all surfaces again with soap and water, or alcohol.
*Wash yourself, especially your hands and face!
