Good handwashing and glove maintenance…
*Make sure to put gloves on right before entering or immediately after.
*make a habit of cleaning your gloves followed by washing your hands when leaving the lab
Bio Safety Lab Requirements: (7)
- All tools touched should be disinfected and sterilized
- all cabinets, fridges, and freezers used for storage should be well labeled and disinfected regularly
- Samples in a centrifuge should be tightly closed
- Sample vials with rubber stoppers should be carefully opened to avoid aerosolized contaminated drops
- Don’t use your mouth for anything
- Don’t fix your hair, your face, nose, or eyes. Gloves shouldn’t touch your skin.
- Know where the emergency stations are!!
BSL lab classifications
BSL-1: permits work with harmless microbes
BSL-2: works with infectious microbes
BSL-3: microbes known for epidemy with known treatments
BSL-4: microbes known for pandemics (SARS)
Biological Safety Cabinet procedures:
*Disinfect before and after using, and before taking anything out
*Place everything you need inside before working
*Allow airflow to start at least 15 mins before and after working
*Only use slow and intentional hand movements when working
*Keep trash can inside BSC
*Disinfect the whole area before leaving the BSC
