Q

Describe File Storage/File System and Volumes?

A

OS systems organize hard drives into Volumes that can span one or more physical disks. A disk volume could also comprise only a portion of a physical disk, in other words, you can carve up a disk into Multiple Volumes if the disk is large enough. Most users in Windows atleast have a C:\ drive as their Primary Volume, whereas Linux users would refer to the File System as ROOT using a slash (/).

Q

Folders?

A

Each volume can store files, commonly organized into Folders (Also called Directories). Windows computers have a Windows Folder for the OS Files, a Users Folder to hold User Profile information and data, and a Program Files Folder to hold installed Applications. Any folder can have many layers of subfolders nested inside it.

Q

Advanced File Attributes?

A

Indexed - Windows and other Applications search file contents for something the user wants to find, but this can take a long time. Linux uses Find for unindexed searching, or locate which searches an indexed file system DB.

Journaling - Windows, Linux, and the macOS support a variety of journaled file systems. Journaling uses transaction log for write activity to the file system. When the OS receives a notification to write something to disk, the OS opens a new journal transaction about what must be written before the data is actually written to disk.

Compressed - NTFS enables file compression so files take up less space on the volume. This compression is invisible to the user, the only thing you might notice is that the file takes slightly longer to open and to save. macOS can use HFS compression to maximize storage efficiency. Linux Chattr command is one method of encrypting files. There are plenty of other Third-Party Compression tools out there for all OS.

Encrypted - NTFS supports file encryption through a feature called Encrypting File System (EFS). This encryption is invisible to the file’s owner. When another user on the same local computer tries to access the file or folder, however, its access is protected by the encryption.

3 main classes of Backup Applications?

A

Image - Copying the entire hard drive and then restores the disk image to new hardware in the event of a drive failure. Popular Imaging Software include StorageCraft, ShadowProtect, and Acronis True Image.

Backup - Backing up individual files and folders that you specify.

File History - Windows 8 and newer come with this that uses an additional storage drive to backup personal documents. Apple includes Time Machine with macOS, which takes snapshots of the users documents.
