CH12 Flashcards
In Sleep Mode, the _____ remains powered; everything else shuts off?
Memory
How long can a laptop remain in Hibernate mode without running out of battery power?
Indefinitely
Hibernate mode uses No Power, so it can remain in that state indefinitely regardless of the battery state or capacity.
How should you clean removable media, such as a DVD?
A. Use a Soft Cloth and Wipe with a Circular Movement
B. Use a Soft Cloth and Wipe inside to outside with a straight movement
C. Use a Soft scrub brush and wipe left to right
D. Put the disk in the dishwashing machine
B. Use a Soft Cloth and Wipe inside to outside with a straight movement.
Rich has inherited a computer that used to live in his uncle’s machine shop. What should he use to clean up parts such as the case, keyboard, and mouse?
A. A Dry, Soft Cloth
B. A Soft Cloth with distilled water
C. A Soft Cloth with mild soap and water
D. A Soft Cloth with a commercial cleaning solution
C. A Soft Cloth with mild soap and water
What standard offers computer part makers guidelines for making environmentally friendly parts?
A. FTC
B. RIAA
C. RoHS
D. VHS
C. The Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive has guidelines for making products more environmentally friendly.
What can you use to prevent ESD from damaging components when cleaning inside a computer?
Antistatic Wrist Strap
What should you use to remove dust and animal hair from inside a computer case?
Compressed Air
What problem can missing slot covers on the case cause?
A. Electromagnetic interference from other electronics nearby
B. Electrostatic discharge from dust and animal hair
C. Disruption of airflow inside the computer leading to overheating
D. Disruption of airflow outside the computer leading to overheating
C. Disruption of airflow inside the computer leading to overheating.
What computer component contains alot of lead and must be recycled?
A. CRT
B. Toner Cartridge
C. Ink Cartridge
D. Hard Disk Drive
A. CRT
CRT Monitors contain lead, so it must be disposed of properly, not thrown out with regular trash.
In California, how should small alkaline batteries be disposed of?
A. Regular Trash
B. Recycling Center
C. Incinerated
D. Any of the Above
B. Recycling Center
Elsewhere in the US, they can be thrown in the regular trash.
Batteries should NEVER be incinerated.
Which type of contingency plan is specific to an IT system or Service?
Disaster Recovery
Disaster Recovery plan provides details for how to restore a specific failed IT system or service to a functional state as quickly as possible.
Power Management?
Means controlling how the computer uses power, with a focus on using less power and making sure power is available when needed.
Energy-Efficient Devices?
Use less energy overall than nonefficient equivalents and may have special energy convservation features.
Leaving the PC Running - Consequences?
- Financial Side - If you leave a Desktop Computer on all the time, you will pay about $200+ a year for its electricity. A laptop is less, around $65+ per year. The busier a computer is, such as with increased disk I/O, a larger monitor, and so on, the more power it will consume.
- A running computer generates heat, and heat is an enemy of computers. If certain chips like the CPU get too hot, they will stop working until they cool down enough. Very high temps can damage a chip immediately, but damage from less intense heat can also accumulate until the chip fails.
- If your computer runs on battery power, leaving it on all the time drains the batter. That’s fine if you close to an AC outlet where you can recharge the batter, but you won’t always be.
For those reasons, you should consider either shutting the computer down entirely or putting it in a low-power mode whenever you are going to be away from it for more than a few minutes.
Low Power Modes?
Sleep - Keeps Memory powered but shuts down all other components. As a result, the computer uses very little power, just enough to allow the Memory to retain its contents. On battery power, a laptop can last about a day in this mode (Depending on battery capacity and conditions of course). Resuming from sleep mode is very fast, just a few seconds in most cases.
Hibernate - Copies Memory content to a reserved area of the hard drive and then powers off ALL components. Since the PC is not using any power, it can remain in Hibernate mode indefinitely. Resuming from Hibernate takes slightly longer than from Sleep, about 15 seconds on average.
