bully pulpit
a public office or position of authority that provides its occupant with an outstanding opportunity to speak out on any issue.
“The president could use a bully pulpit to get his message across.”
cabinet
the committee of senior ministers responsible for controlling government policy.
“The president fills his cabinet with like minded peers.”
executive agreements
an agreement between the heads of government of two or more nations that has not been ratified by the legislature as treaties are ratified.
“The executive agreement between the U.S. and Korea are supposed to be ratified soon.”
Executive office of the president (EOP)
a group of agencies at the center of the executive branch of the United States federal government
“The president met with the executive office of the president to discuss his federal tax redistribution ideas.”
Executive order
a directive issued by the President of the United States that manages operations of the federal government and has the force of law.
“An executive order was issued so the president could get his law passed.”
Executive privilege
the privilege, claimed by the president for the executive branch of the US government, of withholding information in the public interest.
“Nixon used his executive privilege which lead to the water-gate scandal.”
first lady
The presidents wife.
“Michelle Obama is my favorite first lady.”
Inherent powers
powers held by a sovereign state. In the United States, the President derives these powers from the loosely worded statements in the Constitution that “the executive Power shall be vested in a President” and the president should “take care that the laws be faithfully executed”.
“In the U.S. the president is trusted with these inherent powers.”
League of nations
intergovernmental organisation founded on 10 January 1920 as a result of the Paris Peace Conference that ended the First World War. It was the first worldwide intergovernmental organisation whose principal mission was to maintain world peace.
“If someone threatened the world the league of nations would get together to try to prevent this.”
Office of management and budget (OMB)
the largest office within the Executive Office of the President of the United States.
“If the president needs to evaluate the quality of a federal program he needs to call the office of management and budget.”
Pardon
a government decision to allow a person to be absolved of guilt for an alleged crime or other legal offense, as if the act never occurred. The pardon may be granted before or after conviction for the crime, depending on the laws of the jurisdiction.
“If I went to jail i’d pray I get a pardon so it wouldn’t stain my record.”
President
the elected head of a republican state.
“Obama is my favorite president.”
Presidential succession Act
It was an act established in 1792 which discussed who would assume the position of president if the actual president would become unable to do so.
“Due to the presidential succession act if the president dies the vice president would take over.”
Signing Statements
a written pronouncement issued by the President of the United States upon the signing of a bill into law.
“The president finished his signing statements so their are new laws in place.”
25th amendment
allows for the Vice President to become president in the event of death, resignation, removal from office or impairment that prevents the current president from fulfilling his or her duties.
“The Vice president can take over the presidency in time of need due to the 25th amendment.”
