Density

Northern European Americans
Value territory. Personal space: 50% of first marriages end in divorce. Value preventive medicine and primary healthcare. Punctuality valued. Fast food high in fats low in fiber.
African American
Personal space is small. Most households headed by a woman. Strong religious orientation. Unlikely to value time or punctuality. HTN and sickle cell. Alcoholism a problem. Illness is God’s punishment. “Granny” and “the old lady”- folk practitioner.
Native American
Some view traditional handshake as aggressive/ will possibly “lightly touch” hand. May appear silent and reserved. Eye contact is considered rude. Private thoughts are kept to oneself. Not ruled by the clock. Shaman- medicine man/woman. High risk of illness/death (higher than US population as a whole) from alcoholism, suicide/homocide, influenza, diabetes, TB, pneumonia, heart disease and accidents. Nutritional difiency not uncommon.
Latino Americans
touch is common when communicating. Family male dominated. “hot and cold theory” of disease. psychiatric disorders. P Ricans anxiety, depression, substance abuse higher incidence. present time oriented
Asian/ Pacific Islanders
Touching during communication unacceptable. Eye contact often avoided. Reserved. Education valued. Balance of ying and yang= “hot and cold”. Lactose intolerance. Believe psychiatric behavior is merely out of control and brings shame to family. Low alcohol dependence. marginals- reject the traditional values
Western European Americans
France, Italy, Greece. Kissing, hugging: physically expressive. Man head of household. present time oriented. Eldery at home. Italians: pregnant women need the food they crave and cannot move in certain ways : best for baby.
Jewish Americans
health conscious. 1/3 hold advanced degrees. Pork forbidden. dairy products and meat may not be mixed together.
Arab Americans
Favor professional occupations. Touch same members of gender. stand close. Maintain eye contact. Men should not shake women hands. Food is eaten with right hand. Cannot eat pork. Mental illness major social stigma.
Present time oriented Cultural groups/ could be late to appt etc
