CH4.4 P2 Flashcards
What is the cerebral cortex?
Outer layer of cerebrum, responsible for:
* higher-order thinking processes (i.e. problem-solving and planning)
* memory
* language
* regulation of emotions
What are the regions of the cerebral cortex?
Frontal, Parietal, Occipital, Temporal
What are the three areas within cerebral cortex?
sensory, motor, association
What are sensory areas?
Receive and process sensory information
What are motor areas?
Initiate motor movements
What are association areas?
integrate information from both motor and sensory areas
What is the frontal lobe?
located at the front of brain
- composed of motor + association areas
- plans voluntary movement + sends instructions
- involved with sophisticated mental abilities such as reasoning, planning, problem solving, decision making, symbolic thinking, emotional regulation , self awareness and some aspects of personality
What areas do the frontal lobe consist of?
prefrontal (plan), premotor (sequences) , primary motor cortex (execute)
What is the broca’s area?
in charge of speech and articulation (only on left side of brain)
What is the primary motor cortex?
located near back of frontal lobe
responsible:
- movement of skeletal muscles of body
- controls opposite part of body
What is the parietal lobe?
located back half of brain:
composed of sensory and association areas
- processes bodily somatosensory information such as temperature, touch, and the position of body parts
What is the primary somatosensory cortex?
receives and processes sensations such
as touch, pressure, temperature and pain
from the body (opposite part of brain)
What is the occipital lobe?
located at lower back part of brain
sensory and association area
visual sensation and perception
What is the primary visual cortex?
sensory part of brain
receives and processes visual information
everything in sight at the left is processed right
What is the temporal lobe?
located at the sides of brain
comprised of sensory and association areas
