Psychologist
A
- A professional trained in the science of how people think, feel and behave
- Must have completed a minimum of six years university and practical training, but often 2 more with specialization
- Can assess and diagnose mental health disorders, learning disabilities and behavioral problems
- Can treat people for complex psychological conditions such as anxiety disorders but cannot prescribe medication
- No referral required to visit a psychologist

Psychiatrist
A
- Psychiatrist A qualified medical doctor with additional qualifications to specialize in mental illness
- Must have completed a minimum of eleven/twelve years of study, but usually more
- Can assess and diagnose complex mental health disorders such as schizophrenia. Some can assess neurodevelopmental disorders
- Treat people by prescribing medication, brain stimulation (Electroconvulsive therapy ECT) and psychotherapy (talking therapy)
- A GP referral is required to visit a psychiatrist

Cognitive Behavior therapy (CBT)
A
Therapy where talking and listening, trying and help person to adjust thinking about scenario -> change mindset

process of identifying the type of disorder affecting an individual based on signs and symptoms

Common Characteristics disorders
A
- the disorder occurs within the individual and results from dysfunction within the individual
- there is clinically diagnosable dysfunction in thoughts, feelings and/or behaviour, for example, low levels of functioning, social and emotional wellbeing
- the disorder causes significant personal distress or disability in functioning in everyday life
- actions and reactions are atypical of the person and inappropriate within their culture
- the disorder is not a result of a personal conflict with society

Treatment of Mental Health Disorders
A
- The symptoms of most mental disorders can be alleviated or successfully treated
- It is rarely possible for any mental disorder to ‘go away’ without treatment from a qualified professional. Professional help may include psychotherapy and/or medication.
- Other types of therapy or a community program such as participation in a social support group can be helpful.
- There are no known cures for disorders such as neurodevelopmental types, but therapies can alleviate symptoms and help with daily living
