CH4.1, 4.2 Flashcards
Meninges
three transparent membranes that protect the brain
Cerebrospinal Fluid
fluid between membranes that acts as a cushion, skull acts as final layer of protection
Arteries
transport oxygen and nutrients through blood
Blood brain barrier
formed between capillaries limits harmful things that could be in the blood stream
Grey matter
nerve cell bodies and connections made with white matter
White matter
nerve fibers that connect distant brain areas to one another, fatty coating that makes brain look white
Brain ablation
removing or destroying part of brain e.g area of tissue
Involves
- Cutting out + removing
- Irreversible
Brain lesioning (electrical stimulation of brain)
disrupting or damaging normal structure of brain
Involves
- Any area of damage
- May/can be temporary
Split brain experiment
cutting the main band of nerve tissue (corpus collosum) that connects the two hemispheres -> this stops hemispheres from communicating
Affect:
Reduce the incidence and severity of epileptic seizures
Corpus callosum
tissue that connects the two hemispheres
What did the splitbrain experiment find out?
found the concept of contralateral organizing -> controls body from opposite side
What does the left hemisphere control?
- Language + voluntary movement on the right side of the body
- can see objects from the right
- can say objects
- can indicate what they saw by drawing with right hand
What does the right hemisphere control?
- right side is responsible for voluntary movement of the left side of the body
- cant say what they saw
- can indicate what they saw by drawing what they saw
