Q

What are the indications for Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang?

A

Pi (fullness and distention of stomach without pain) caused by the binding of cold and heat.

Note: As long as there is cold and heat binding in the middle jiao you can use this formula. Often these are cases where people suffer from chronic digestive problems for 10 - 20 years so they may have deficiency, cold and hot, spleen, stomach and liver problems (maybe other organs like kidney) all contributing.

Q

When cold in heat binds in the middle jiao to cause fullness without pain, what is happening and what signs do we see?

A

There is a disorder of qi properly ascending and descending in the middle jiao.

1) Stomach qi fails to descend, reversed rise of stomach qi: nausea and vomiting
2) Spleen qi fails to ascend, spleen qi sinking: diarrhea
