Ch.38 - Viruses Flashcards
Do antibiotics affect viruses?
Antibiotics only affect bacteria and fungi, not viruses.
Draw a diagram of a virus.
Must include a protein coat(capsid) and nucleic acid(either DNA or RNA).
Explain the difficulty in describing viruses as living.
Viruses are non-cellular and have no metabolism. They are obligate parasites.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of viruses?
Advantages include genetic engineering and the use of viruses to control bacterial infections.
Disadvantages include diseases in humans, plants and animals.
What is a bacteriophage?
A bacteriophage is a virus that infects bacteria.
What are obligate parasites?
Obligate parasites can only live and reproduce inside a living host.
How do viruses infect and replicate in a host cell?
The virus attaches to the host cell. It sends its nucleic acid in to the host cell. It uses the host cell’s organelles to replicate viral parts. The virus assembles and then the virus is released.
Name viral animal and plant diseases.
Plant: potato mosaic and tomato mosaic disease.
Animal: Rabies, cowpox.
