CH34 - Nervous System (Cranial Nerves) Flashcards
Week 13
The brain consists of
- Cerebrum
- Cerebellum
- Brain stem
- Diencephalon
Largest portion of the brain
Cerebrum
Second largest division of the brain
Cerebellum
Reflex centers for hearing, vision, and motor pathways
Midbrain
Helps regulate breathing rate
Pons
Regulates heartbeat, breathing, vasoconstriction (BP); Reflex centers for vomiting, coughing, sneezing, swallowing, & hiccupping
Medulla oblongata
Regulates hunger, sleep, thirst, body temperature, blood pressure & water
balance
Hypothalamus
Functions as a sensory “relay center” for incoming nerve impulses; Participates in memory & emotions
Thalamus
Provides communication between the brain & the peripheral nerves;
carries messages to or from the brain
Spinal cord
Carries information from receptors to the brain/spinal cord
The afferent/sensory nervous system
Carries information from the brain or spinal cord to muscles or glands
The efferent/motor nervous system
The efferent division of PNS is divided into 2 subdivisions
- Somatic nervous system
- Autonomic nervous system
Includes all nerves controlling the muscular system & external sensory receptors; Serves the skin, muscles, joints & tendons
Somatic nervous system (SNS)
Operates without any conscious control
Autonomic nervous system (ANS)
“Fight or flight”
Sympathetic
“Rest or digest”
Parasympathetic
How many cranial nerves are there?
12 cranial nerves
Cranial nerve 1 & function
Olfactory - sensory nerve (smell)
Cranial nerve 2 & function
Optic nerve - sensory nerve (sight)
Cranial nerve 3 & function
Oculomotor nerve - motor nerve (eye movement, pupil size, open eyelid)
Cranial nerve 4 & function
Trochlear nerve - motor nerve (muscle of eye moves up, down, lateral)
Cranial nerve 5 & function
Trigeminal nerve - motor & sensory nerve (largest nerve; face/scalp sensation)
Cranial nerve 6 & function
Abducens nerve - motor nerve (moves eye laterally)
Cranial nerve 7 & function
Facial nerve - motor & sensory nerve (facial expression, taste sensation)
