CH28 - Muscles of Mastication Flashcards
Week 10
The end attached to the least movable structure
Origin
The other end, attached to the more movable structure (moves toward origin)
Insertion
the work that is accomplished when muscle fibers contract
Action
Muscles of Mastication
- Masseter
- Temporalis
- Medial pterygoid
- Lateral pterygoid
The muscles of mastication are attached to the mandible & are responsible for
- Elevating
- Protruding
- Retruding
- Laterally
Muscles of mastication are innervated by the
5th cranial nerve (trigeminal nerve)
Where does the blood supply for the muscles of mastication come from?
Maxillary artery
Most powerful of the muscles of mastication
Masseter
What is the action of the masseter muscle?
Elevates the mandible (closes)
What is the origin of the masseter muscle?
2 areas on the zygomatic arch
Where is the insertion of the masseter muscle?
Into the angle of the mandible on the lateral side
What is the action of the temporalis muscle?
Elevate or retrude the mandible
What is the origin of the temporalis muscle?
From temporal fossa
Where is the insertion of the temporalis muscle?
Into coronoid process of mandible
What is the action of the medial pterygoid muscle?
Elevates the mandible (closes)
What is the origin of the medial pterygoid muscle?
Medial side of lateral pterygoid plate & fossa or Maxillary tuberosity
Where is the insertion of the medial pterygoid muscle?
Angle of mandible (medial side)
What is the action of the lateral pterygoid muscle?
- Protrude & depress mandible (both heads function)
- Lateral excursion
What is the origin of the lateral pterygoid muscle?
- Superior-infratemporal crest of the greater wing of sphenoid bone
-Inferior-lateral side of the lateral pterygoid plate
Where is the insertion of the lateral pterygoid muscle?
Anterior border of the TMJ & neck of the condyle
Horseshoe-shaped bone suspended beneath the mandible, with the open end of the horseshoe pointed posteriorly
Hyoid bone
Suprahyoid muscles
Above hyoid
Infrahyoid muscles
Below hyoid
Suprahyoid group
- Digastric muscle
- Mylohyoid muscle
- Geniohyoid Muscle
- Stylohyoid Muscle
Muscle fibers at opposite ends & tendon in the middle
Digastric muscle
What is the action of the digastric muscle?
Retrudes the mandible, lifts the hyoid bone, pulls larynx
up, pulls mandible down
What is the origin of the digastric muscle?
Digastric notch of temporal bone just medial to the mastoid process behind the ear
Where is the insertion of the digastric muscle?
Digastric fossa on inferior surface of mandible at the midline
What 2 nerves supply the digastric muscle?
- Trigeminal nerve
- Facial nerve
Muscle that forms floor of the mouth
Mylohyoid muscle
