Ch31/32 Flashcards
How do the populations differ from communities and ecosystems?
Population: members of a species in a specific area
Communities: Several members of different species all in a specific area interacting
Ecosystem: biotic (alive) and the abiotic factors (temp., precipitation, etc)
What are the main factors/determiners of a biome (what is a biome)?
Temperature and precipitaiton determine biomes.
Also soil and fire, but not nearly as much.
How many terrestrial biomes are there in the book (ch32)? Check the maps
17 terrestrial biomes
The direct competition between two species occupying the same niche will often lead to?
Competive exclusion -> specialization
What is plant communities’ resilience? What is it (Lander Site) resilient to?
The return of plant communities after logging, water based erosion, fires, etc.
Does not change ecosystem/biome, but same returns after event.
What ecosystem type would the Lander Woodlot in Rogers Height represent?
Temperate mixed forest
What is the name of the beech tree in Latin? What is its family? What is name of beech scale insect? How are the Latin/scientific names useful?
Beech tree latin name: Fagus grandifolia
Beech family: Fagaceae (Nut family)
Beech scale insect: Cryptococcus fagisuga
Latin/scientific names are useful by helping you understand main fucntion of the organism, its host/location, or defining factors of the organism.
